Aphorisms on Dreams (from my journal)

Abandon all hope
Ye who enter here.
Those words are written not
Above the gates of hell
But of heaven.
So long as we have hope in things
We do not need God:
Blessed are those who fail.

In America we are very respectful of "dreams," that is, of vain imaginations of the future. Instead of being happy in the present, we elect to be happy when we have enough money, or when we have lost weight. But when we have enough money, we worry that we will lose it, and we cannot lose the weight for the very reason that the more unhappy we are about being fat, the more we eat to take away the pain.
"Dare to dream," we say, as if this were not already the fallen state of humanity. Better that we should say "Dare not to dream," and should wake up to the world that is right before our eyes.

Wake up! Wake up! Somehow it sounds abstract. It's not. If right now you should stand up upon and chair and should shout at the top of your lungs, something will happen. Let your lungs ache and your throat bleed. Sometimes it seems to me that we have only so many chances in this life, so many chances to avoid becoming a walking tomb.

What is the secret of the happiness of the saint? Among other things, the decision to suffer and be miserable. So long as we wish to be happy, we will never be happy.
"Take up your cross and follow me."
-----
The desire to be happy is the greatest cause of unhappiness.
