Judge Not, Leave it to God

Posted by Victoria Bresee, 4/5/05 at 9:30:47 AM.

In the chapter entitled, "Forgiveness, a New Look,"  clinical neuroscientist and psychiatrist, Daniel Amen, M.D, (Healing the Hardware of the Soul: How Making the Brain-Soul Connection Can Optimize Your Life, Love, and Spiritual Growth) states:

Since I have been able to look inside the living brain, my opinion on judging others has dramatically changed.  I used to believe in the death penalty--I had sort of an-eye-for-an-eye mentality.  The year after I started the brain-imaging work, I wondered how we could put anyone to death when they behaved out of a brain that didn't work right.  It seemed inhumane and lacked the current understanding we have of the brain.  I have a better understanding why Matthew quotes Jesus as saying, "Judge not, that you may not be judged.  For with the judgment you make you shall be judged."  A person's brain is complex.  God has it figured out, and judgment is best left to his realm.

The Lord sees not as a man sees, for man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart (and in the brain).
