The European Court of Human Rights found Turkey guilty of torture in 1996 for the use of a widely used technique of “Palestinian hanging” allegedly used by Israel in the Palestinian territories. Remember the grinning US soldiers, with their thumbs up, around an iced corpse, well, reports now indicate that Manadel al-Jamadi died in the same especially painful position, hanging by his wrists, with his arms hyper-extended behind him.  After the “Abu Ghraib scandal broke, the CIA suspended the use of its "enhanced interrogation techiniques," including stress positions, because of fears that the agency could be accused of unsanctioned and illegal activity. The Washington Post said the White House had approved the tactics.”

Unfortunately, they weren’t suspended, instead, because of the realization that we were no better than those we want to save the world from.
